Music Theory

Music theory is important to musicians of all disciplines and levels. Students of music theory study such things as sound, pitch, harmony, rhythm, notation, and melody. Some individuals are intimidated by the term “music theory.” They feel music theory is too mechanical and burdened with rules and regulations created by others. Often they feel drawn to simply experiment and create and, as a result, may feel imprisoned by the need to learn such things as scales, intervals, and chords.

While it is possible to produce satisfying musical sounds without a firm understanding of music theory, the creative options, range, and even employability of the musician increases with the understanding of established musical structures. Musicians with a working knowledge of music theory are able to create richer, original creations with greater depth.

Music is an intricate entanglement of art and science. It is both emotional and technical. These contrasting elements may be hard for some to grasp, especially those who prefer to focus on music’s inspirational qualities. However, the fact is that while the beautiful sounds that serve to arouse a certain mood in the listener cannot be described in technical terms, the elements of the music certainly can. Musicians can use knowledge of music theory to create beautiful and deeply inspirational music.

At a music school, we strive to produce well-rounded, successful musicians. We work to make sure our musicians are as skilled and knowledgeable in the scientific aspects of music as they are talented. We succeed in our goals as our graduates go on to become some of the world’s most outstanding musicians.
