A music manager is an individual who spends time and energy working to help a musician or group of musicians succeed. The duties of a music manager are not set in stone and easy to define. Music managers perform all sorts of tasks ranging from the business-oriented to the more personal, with new responsibilities cropping up every day. Far from working for free, music managers get paid for their enthusiastic interest and professional help, usually in the form of a percentage of the artist’s or group’s earnings.
On the business end, music managers provide information to musicians regarding the industry and recording companies, advertising, promotion, and merchandising. Music managers serve as a link between the musician and important people in the entertainment industry. They help artists get gigs and make all the right moves to further their careers.
Although personal tasks are not usually included in the job description, many music managers perform them anyway, ranging from behaving as a personal counselor to acting as a personal assistant. A manager may coach a nervous musician through his first concert appearance, or hold the hand of a hopeful singer as she waits for news of an anticipated record deal. Some managers help transport musicians from gig to gig, book hotel rooms, and reserve seats on flights. Many even help musicians choose their clothing. A good music manager can be a musician’s most trusted confidant and most valuable asset.
